One
OF A KIND SHOP
Organized by Linda Flaherty

Beginning
January the Blanden will display ceramic artist Mary Weisgram in the One-of-a-Kind
Shop. Many people may already be
familiar with Mary's work and will especially remember her distinctive, colorful
finishes. She is associated with the Creative Artists Studio of
Ames, known as CASA, and produces functional and decorative pottery. Mary's
work will be available for sale at the Blanden during the winter and early
spring months.
Mary began her fine art career as a painter, and this love of the painted surface is evident, as she gracefully translates her painterly style into ceramic forms with finish treatments that have become very recognizable as her signature work. Her pieces are organic in feel, utilizing several two dimensional techniques in surface treatments including staining, layering of glazes, and the creation of stencils using natural materials.
Check
our adult class listings page for Mary's workshop, and join us to take part
in this unique learning opportunity. Her workshop will entail two Saturdays,
the first on March 8th for hand building the stoneware pieces, and Saturday
April 19th for glazing and finishing. This will be a wonderful class for anyone
with a love of clay and a desire to gain a wealth of information from an expert.
Charles Granger Blanden on the
day of the dedication of the Blanden Art Museum in June 1932, simply stated,
"We are not here to be thanked, but to give thanks for the opportunity
be here."
